Power is an interesting concept. Hunger for power makes people do things they would not normally do. People in power are known for doing bad things and getting away with them. That is why most stories around power struggles are stories of revenge, betrayal and deceit. ZEE5 explores the struggle for and abuse of power in it’s movies and original series. Here’s a look at a few of them.

The Casino, is clearly about the struggle for power. Sudhanshu Pandey, as Marwah, is the owner of a grand casino. However, he hasn’t named an heir yet. Vicky Marwah, his son played by Karanvir Bohra, and Rehana, the women he is having an affair with played by Mandana Karimi, are both vying to take control of the Casino.

Chargesheet: Innocent Or Guilty explores the concept of power in romantic relationships. Antara is married to Shivraz, a national champion in badminton. However she has an affair Ranveer Pratap Singh, who is a powerful politician. He gets jealous of Shiraz and kills him to be with Antara. The ultimate powerplay is done by Antara’s mother who keeps trying to get her daughter married into the more powerful family.

Next in line for the theme of power in politics is The Accidental Prime Minister. The film explores the level of betrayal and deceit that goes on to get leverage at the highest position of power in the country, the Prime Minister. Anupam Kher’s portrayal of ex-PM Manmohan Singh was well-received by critics and audiences alike.

The first season of Rangbaaz follows the life of real-life gangster, Shiv Prakash Shukla, who quit college to become the most feared contract killer in India during the 90’s. This series explores how he gained power by creating an aura of fear around him and used that power to commit even more fearsome acts.

Rangbaaz Phirse, tells the story of another gangster, Amarpal Singh, based on a real life story. The story explores how gangsters gain power through illegal businesses and eventually get enough power to join the politics of the country itself. This series is an eye-opening look at the life of one of most conflicted gangsters in the country.

Poison is a story of power with revenge and betrayal. Ranveer Shrivastav is framed for a crime that he didn’t commit by the people who were closest to him. While they betray Ranveer to get power, he decides to take back the power as a way to get revenge on them. Watch this gripping revenge saga continue in the second season of Poison.

The Verdict: State V/s Nanavati explores how different communities try to gain power in society. Throughout the case of Prem Ahuja’s murder and Sylvia Nanavati’s infidelity, there is an undercurrent of Sindhis against Parsis. The Parsis try to prove their cultural superiority to prove Nanavati innocent while the Sindhis want to use their power and get justice for Prem Ahuja.

Codename Gondya is the story of a power struggle set in the pre-independence era. The Chapekar brothers tried to assassinate W. C. Rand, the British officer at the time of the plague epidemic in Pune, who was responsible for many atrocities such as forced entries, illegal searches, stripping women in public, and destroying personal property. The brothers tried to regain their lost power and honour  by assassinating him.
