The name actually comes from tarot cards. A deck of tarot cards is divided into Major and Minor Arcanas. The second highest card in the Major Arcana is the High Priestess. It has a picture of a woman sitting, wearing a blue robe with a cross. She wears a horned crown and a crescent moon rests by her feet. She also has a scroll in her hand that reads ‘TORA’. There are two pillars on either side of her with the letters B and J written on them.

High Priestess is associated with the water sign, Cancer. It represents the feminine divine, sacred knowledge and can stand for being sensitive, emotional, calm, protective and artistic. The High Priestess is said to be operational at a subconscious level and remains as mysterious as the moon. The letters B and J on the pillars stand for Boaz – denial and severity and Jachin – clemency and beginnings. A popular belief is that the scroll that reads ‘TORA’ is probably an anagram for tarot.

A querent who picks up the upright High Priestess card may be inclined towards learning, new beginnings, better clarity and vision. A querent who picks up the inverted High Priestess card is said to be ignorant, selfish and shallow. Now that you have your basics set, it’s time to binge Amala Akkineni’s High Priestess.
