Diwali weekend has begun and we know all of you guys are busy preparing for Lakshmi Puja. Besides praying to Goddess Lakshmi, many people also do a Kuber puja on this day since he is also one of the most wealthiest Gods. This day marks the beginning of Diwali. People clean their houses and decorate it with lights to welcome Goddess Lakshmi into their homes.

The story behind Lakshmi Puja
It is said that during the churning of oceans by Gods and demons, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the sea with a lot of treasures like rubies, emeralds, diamonds and so on. Goddess Lakshmi was in the deepest part of the ocean and her absence caused imbalance in the world. As soon as she emerged from the ocean, prosperity returned.
What to do
Lakshmi puja is conducted on the third day after Dhanteras, which is on the day of Diwali. You wake up early in the morning, have the oldest woman in your house rub some til oil on your head, perform a puja, apply kumkum paste on your feet and then you go shower. In the evening, you pray to Goddess Lakshmi by performing a special puja for the well being and prosperity of your family.
What to cook
Before the puja, you can make some delicious sundal, some payasam and vadai as an offering to the Goddess. You can also make some sheera or other savories, based on your preferences.
