As the harvest festival nears, here are some fun and interesting rangoli designs that we’ve compiled, to help you try something new this Pongal.
Pongal, the festival of harvest, wealth, goodness and happiness, is here! Celebrated mainly by Tamilians all over the world, Pongal coincides with Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu, as the festival of harvest is observed by the entire country with interesting rituals. While they all have scrumptious food, beautifully decorated household, new clothes and the unification of communities in common, there are some differences that set the festivals apart.
In Pongal, Tamilians don’t just indulge in guzzling down vennpongal and sakkara pongal but also decorate the house with artistic kolam designs at the entrance. The idea behind preparing kolam outside the house is to bring colours, vibrancy and positivity to the household. On the day of Pongal, women of the household wake up at 4 am to draw kolams and deck up the hallway. In fact, sketching kolams is a big sport followed in Tamil Nadu. A huge competition takes place every year in Mylapore, Chennai, where people compete to draw the most intricate yet symmetrically beautiful kolams with Pongal as the theme.
