One of the most popular films of 2019, Fatteshikast will transport you to the time of Shivaji Maharaj and his era. The movie focuses on one of Shivaji Maharaj’s surgical strikes, known to be the first surgical strike in India, in which he takes down Shaista Khan’s Mughal army from capturing Pune! By planning this attack, Shivaji saved hundreds of people from the daily troubles they faced due to the Mughals. The film stars Chinmay Mandlekar, Mrinal Kulkarni, Ankit Mohan, Trupti Todarmal among others and was widely appreciated for its accurate depictions, and stunning sets!

Dhurala
This film is a through and through political drama starring Ankush Chaudhari, Sai Tamhankar, Sonalee Kulkarni, Amey Wagh and Siddharth Jadhav in pivotal roles. The film revolves around the village of Ambegaon where its leader Nitturve Ubhe dies suddenly and his entire family begins to fight for the leadership. Directed by Sameer Vidwans, this film was liked by critics and viewers alike and is one of the best Marathi films of 2020!

Anandi Gopal
Set in the 1800s, this film recently won the National Award for the Best Feature Film on Social Issues! Starring Lalit Prabhakar and Bhagyashree, this is another great film directed by Sameer Vidwans. It is based on the story of the first female physician of India, Anandi Gopal who was encouraged by her husband to become a doctor! The film boasts of nuanced acting and a marvellous script and will make you fall in love with it!

Baji
This 2015 film starring Shreyas Talpade and Amruta Khanvilkar is about a man named Baji who seems to have a lot of qualities of Shivaji Maharaj. He has a sword, a horse and a bow-and-arrow as well! He makes it his own duty to protect his village from the villainous Martand who wants to wreak havoc as he looks for a treasure buried under the village. Baji depicts the story of a common man who becomes a messiah for his people in a village in Maharashtra!

Raj Karan
This 2011 film is based on the Thackeray family and is drenched in politics. Many real-life incidents and characters are depicted in this film to show an overview of the political scene of the previous decade. It revolves around two brothers, Raj and Uddhav and their opposite political ideologies and how their workers get stuck in this crossfire. It has a great cast and some very good actors to showcase as well.
