There’s something sinister about watching serial killers that terrifies us and yet we cannot look away. The series Abhay is one of the finest psychological thrillers from India which highlights some of the most horrifying psychopaths and is based on true crimes. Kunal Kemmu returns for his second season as STF inspector Abhay Pratap Singh. The new cast also includes Ram Kapoor, Nidhi Singh, Chunky Pandey, Asha Negi, Raghav Juyal and Indraneil Sengupta.

Abhay (Kunal Kemmu) moves on after the death of his wife during a case. He sends his son to a boarding school while living with his girlfriend a journalist/TV anchor Sonam (Asha Negi). He cuts short his official leave to return to work and gets a new team with Khushboo (Nidhi Singh) a younger but highly capable officer. They begin their crime-solving journey targetting heinous murderers from which we have so far seen Chunky Pandey and Bidita Bag.
The biggest surprise in the new season of Abhay is not who is the criminal but more on how the criminal is caught and why the person developed such murderous instincts in the first place. In the second season, Abhay feels like a second skin for Kunal Kemmu. He easily plays the role of a supercop who is able to drown out the noise and hype and focus on the case by trusting his instincts and skills. Nidhi Singh’s character, Khushboo, feels like the perfect apprentice for Abhay and even seems like a good candidate to take over the mantle from him sometime in the future.
The real scares and thrills come from the actors who portray these chilling crimes. Chunky Pandey surprises everyone playing the role of a serial killer in the very first episode. His role of a regular family man who hides a thinly veiled dark side will give you the chills and a good example of his real talent. Bidita Bag continues her trend of picking unconventional roles after Babumoshai Bandookbaaz and The Sholay Girl. She plays the role of a prostitute who seduces her clients and kills them brutally that will titillate and terrify you.
Just when you think Abhay can track serial killers almost too easily he meets his worthy opponent. Ram Kapoor gives off serious joker vibes in this series. He has no name, no history and shockingly no fingerprints either. He is capabale of some of the most violent crimes and seems completely in control at all times. This is again a much different side to Ram Kapoor we are used to and we absolutely dig it.
The director Ken Ghosh deserves special mention for not glorifying the violent crimes. The crimes depicted in this series will shock and scare you and make you want to see them brought to brought to justice. The writing of this series is crisp with no-nonsense over-the-top drama, engaging you rather with the police process and the mindsets of serial killers.
The first three episodes of Abhay and bloody and brutal and if the short teaser at the end of the third episode proves anything it is going to get bloodier. Watch out for the remaining episodes releasing on 4 September 2020.
