After Chakka Jam Success, Rakesh Tikait Warns Centre Of Intensifying Farmers’ Agitation

A chakka Jam was successfully held by the farmers on 6 February to protest the central government’s three farm bills and issues surrounding it, including the ban of internet in and around protest sites and the alleged exclusion of farmers’ welfare in the new union budget. The nationwide blockade, also the first mega event after the Republic Day fiasco was initiated by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha. Now, farm union leader Rakesh Tikait has openly warned the centre to resolve the agrarian issues, failing which he said that the protests will go on till as late as 2 October (Gandhi Jayanti). He further stated that no more phone calls from the centre’s representatives will be entertained by his community and all dialogue will take place with an equal participation from both sides.

During Saturday’s event, demonstrators from Punjab and Haryana saw the maximum turnout, while cultivators from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Delhi did not participate in the chakka jam. Fortunately, the Ghazipur and Singhu borders remained peaceful throughout the day.

In a related news, the agrarian revolution continues to gain political momentum after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched another attack on the centre through his tweet, writing that the Modi government has spoilt the budget of both, home, and country. The politician is scheduled to visit Rajasthan on 12 February to continue lending support to the farmers.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar said yesterday that his state will not accept the agricultural bills, citing that neither is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) helping the farmers, nor is it answering their woes. Maharashtra state minister Nawab Malik, who participated in the chakka jam from Mumbai on Saturday accused the federal rule of making laws that only benefit its close aides rather than elevating the country’s farmers.
