Akriti Kakar speaks up finally and opens up about the praises the contestants get on reality shows. She gives out the harsh reality and explains what she does to get out of such situations

As an independent musician, singer Akriti Kakar has just released a new song, Thomkiya Thomkiya. When we ask her about the song, she says that while judging for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Bengali, she met composer Shubham Moitra. The discussion about a song began in January and February, but they couldn’t find the perfect time. Then they decided that there was no better time than Durga Puja. When Shaan heard the music, he fell in love with it and suggested that they all collaborate. The song was sung over the course of four days, while the video was recorded, edited, and colour corrected over the course of three days.

The song is a mash-up of Hindi and Bengali lyrics. Akriti came up with the concept. Only a Bengali song would keep the Hindi crowd at bay. But she believes in resurrecting folk music. She wanted to bridge the gap between her original and the older tune. She blended it out to make it look more festive.

She also said how the shutdown was really beneficial to indie artists and bands. When the lockdown began, films ceased being released, and film music also did not come out. It was a huge win-win situation for independent musicians. When things started to loosen up a little, independent bands created a lot of videos. They made good use of their time. There was a gap created by a dearth of cinematic music, which they filled with independent music and videos.

The lady also discussed her experience as a reality show judge and how false praise can be harmful to individuals. Personally, and luckily, the type of reality programs she did, did not compel her to say anything. If she goes as a judge and always applauds people getting the notion that competitors are faultless. It is critical to be truthful with their own selves and the contestants. If she is not truthful, she is lying, and she can’t do that. Music is a kind of worship for her. Praise does aid in the development of a budding talent. But if someone has flaws, there are 10 different ways to display them. She has also appeared as a participant in reality programs. She would be devastated if someone claimed my voice isn’t any good.

However, as a judge, she believes she should make ideas for improvement. It might be recommending a method adjustment. She believes that correct moderation is more beneficial than criticism. It is the judges responsibility, and she would provide ideas on how to pronounce things more correctly. Her guruji would hold a tiny Nataraj pencil in between her teeth and advise her to sing with that pencil in her mouth when she was a youngster since she had a lisping problem. He also forced her to read Hindi newspapers. At times, a judge must recognise when performance is taking precedence over singing. Appreciation is essential, but demonstrating the correct way is much more crucial. If we don’t, the kids will be in big trouble in the actual world. When the show ends, they are taken aback.
