Auto Shankar, Thiravam, Kallachirippu: ZEE5 Bags Six Laurels At Black Sheep Digital Awards

It’s raining awards for ZEE5! And this time, it is in the southern market. Check out the trophies bagged by ZEE5 in Chennai.

ZEE5 has made its mark yet again in the OTT industry. The platform bagged 6 awards for its original content at the recently held Black Sheep Digital Awards in Chennai. While film actor Prasanna bagged the best actor award in the male category for his role in ZEE5 Original series Thiravam, Amrutha Srinivasan won the same award in the female category for Kallachirripu. Auto Shankar, which has already bagged several awards in other digital award properties also won a couple of awards and ZEE5 original series Nisha also made its presence felt.

1. Best Director: Rohit Nandakumar for Kallachirippu

Kallachirippu is the story of a 24-year old woman in an arranged marriage who accidentally kills her husband during a fight and then scrambles to save herself by calling her boyfriend for help. Director Rohit, who is also an actor in this series, was roped into this by famous director Karthik Subbaraj, who turned producer for this series. Karthik had liked Rohit’s work in Aviyal. The series opened to rave reviews.Firstpost says that “Writer-director Roju, who also plays one of the leads of the show, uses a non-linear screenplay to make the narrative very interesting by revisiting events – multiples times — at crucial junctures to make it a riveting watch.”

2. Best Actor (Male): Prasanna for Thiravam

In Thiravam, Prasanna plays the role of a scientist who gets into trouble after he claims to have invented a cost-effective herbal fuel. As a result, he is forced to deal with the wrath of politicians and corporate moghuls who want to bump him off. This was Prasanna’s first foray into the digital sphere and the audience and critics alike simply loved him in this role. According to a review in Indian Express, “Prasanna is a terrific choice by the makers to play a scientist. Nowhere you see the actor, but simply see the character.”

3. Best Actor (Female): Amrutha Srinivasan for Kallachirippu

Amrutha Srinivasan plays 24-year old Mahanati in Kallachirippu who is in an unhappy arranged marriage and accidentally kills her husband during a fight. The News Minute calls hers to be a ‘terrific performance’. “The way she squeezes the milk out a packet to distract her mother from the dead body in the house was nicely done,” says a review on their site.

4. Best Cinematographer: Manoj Paramahamsa for Auto Shankar

Auto Shankar is the story of serial killer Gowri Shankar, an auto driver from Thiruvanmiyur who was hanged for murdering six people in the 1980s. Set in Madras of the 80s, this series calls for exemplary camera work and that’s where Manoj Paramahamsa played a pivotal role in the rave reviews garnered by Auto Shankar. “It’s this unique visual quality that sets it apart from other web series in this genre. Painstakingly shot (by Manoj Paramahamsa, Manikandan S and KG Venkatesh), the show triumphs in taking us to the Madras of the 80s, where Vijaykanth posters line the walls and the Contessa is the dream car for any up-and-coming hustler,” says the Film Companion.

5. Best Editor: PK for Nisha

Nisha is a psychological thriller where one deranged man suddenly kidnaps three women, including Nisha, for what seems like no apparent rhyme or reason. However, there is a method to every madness and a reason for every seemingly random act. As the drama unfolds, we find out why the three women have been kidnapped. With good, sharp editing skills, PK or Pon Kathiresan has ensured that viewers feel every inch of the horror and suspense that marks this series.

6. Best Music Director: Arrol Corelli for Auto Shankar

Arrol Corelli was instrumental in giving audience the full experience of Auto Shankar. From edgy, menacing overtones to depict the killer in Auto Shankar, to the orchestra-style music that dominated the tamil film industry in the 80s, Corelli ensured that the audience’s eyes stayed glued to the screen.
