Black Widows: How Scenery And Real Locations Enhanced The Show’s Overall Appeal

A popular quote by filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock goes as, “To make a great film you need three things -the script, the script and the script.” And yes, the foundation of any movie or a TV show usually depends on its script and screenplay. However, one major factor that has made its way in the basics of cinema is the visual treatment of a film. The moody frames and beautiful visuals are some of the things that keeps the viewers glued to their screens. Kudos to Birsa Dasguptawho was able to blend in beautiful visuals with his intriguing storyline in Black Widows.

The use of VFX and special effects can give a scene its final touch-up but it’s the scenery that enlightens a frame naturally. And Black Widows, since it was shot in real locations became a visual treat for the viewers. The series was shot in the heart of Kolkata, the suburban region that’s filled with some beautiful imagery including pristine lakes and dense forest that give you a feel of beautiful countryside.

What makes Black Widows Visually Enhancing With A Dark Undertone?

Enlightening the mood of the show from the beginning, the setting of the lake played a vital role in the story as it becomes the place where the crux of the plot is executed, yes the ‘accidental’ killings of their abusive husbands. And the makers made the most out of the beautiful scenery to perfectly portray the theme of vengeance through different frames.

This scenic location made the scene stood out. A perfect picturesque location that otherwise looks happy was used for a rather brutal and important scene.

Also, the strokes of characterization were pretty right in the show, breaking the usual principles of storytelling. Here’s how Mona Singh transformed into a resilient and strong Veera. Also, her well-kept house reflects the character being devoid of emotions and attachments after suffering from her abusive marriage. Here’s how Mona evolved from being bubbly to a dauntless Veera, and certainly it seems that the setting of her house stands as a metaphor to her persona in the show.

Swastika Mukherjee transformed into an intelligent and cunning Jayati. One look at her surroundings and you’re convinced that be it her appearance or her villa, everything symbolizes the ‘freedom’ and the new beginning of her journey.

Shamita Shetty essays a moody Kavita. To represent which the makers have put in the right efforts in detailing the character and most importantly her standard of living, be it her living space or her stylish attires, everything seems to be filled with shades of different colors ultimately standing out for Kavita as a visual metaphor. And that’s how the detailing of the production value adds value to the story of Black Widows.

For Black Widows, it had the privilege of its storyline. Abusive marriages and its depiction matching up to the reality and what consequences it has serves as the main theme of the story. But Black Widows relied heavily not only on its star cast but also on its beautiful visuals. 

This seems fair since the makers wanted it to be a visually engaging show. Every genre has its own demands. For a dark and riveting drama,  it is essential to convince and engage the audience with its atmosphere.
