In the ‘60s and the ‘70s, the Hindi film industry saw a lot of new actors beginning their careers. While some became prominent in the industry and achieved stardom, there were also some who could not stay in the long run and quit the industry. One such actress is Zaheeda Hussain, who had stayed in the industry for three years, and starred in three films, after which she quit acting. Interestingly, she is also Sanjay Dutt‘s cousin. Zaheeda Hussain is the daughter of Anwar Hussain, a celebrated actor of the Hindi film industry, and the granddaughter of Jaddanbai, who was a well-known and respected actor, composer, singer, dancer, and filmmaker. Zaheeda Hussain debuted in 1968 with the Sanjeev Kumar starrer Anokhi Raat. After that, she did two films with Dev Anand, which were Prem Pujari and Gambler.
While in Prem Pujari (1970), she had starred as a supporting actress, in Gambler (1971), she was the leading lady. She later married a businessman, Kesari Nandan Sahay, and announced her retirement from acting. The 76 years old actress, even to this day, is still recognized as ‘Dev Anand’s heroine’.

Zaheeda Hussain’s grandmother, Jaddanbai, is also the mother of the late actress Nargis. Nargis Dutt, was the wife of Sunil Dutt, and the mother of Sanjay Dutt, which makes Sanjay Dutt, Zaheeda’s paternal cousin. Reportedly, Zaheeda’s father, Anwar Hussain, who was also an actor, was against Zaheeda’s wishes of becoming an actress. Zaheeda had to convince her father a lot to let her act. However, despite being a beautiful and talented actress, she did not continue her acting career.
