ZEE5 Web Desk . Mar 04, 2021 .

This Women’s Day, Rupal Faria talks about challenging patriarchy and fight societal norms that dictate how a woman should live her life. She is a Yoga instructor of many popular Bollywood A-Listers like Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Soha Ali Khan and others.

Today’s women are addressed as independent but nevertheless are questioned for their choices related to everything in life like career, clothes, motherhood etc. They fight against the societal norms and their judgements every day yet they are burdened with expectation at every step of life. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Celebrity Yoga Trainer Rupal Sidhpura Faria tells us about her fight against the barriers of patriarchy and what she chooses to challenge this year.

Rupal developed an interest in yoga very early on in life as her father was into it. The strength that he drew from yoga inspired her to take this path. She said that Yoga has had a great impact on her life as it has helped her maintain mental and physical fitness and has also helped her overcome many hurdles of life. When asked what barriers she had to face during her journey, her answer was an interesting analogy. She compared a woman’s life to an obstacle course that one is trying to win. She said she herself has faced obstacles from her in-laws. She was constantly questioned by people around her if she was taking care of her household chores along with her career. She also said that she was questioned about the type of clothes she wore during her yoga classes and also about her late working hours and the time she returned home.

Rupal expressed her gratitude towards everyone around her when asked how she feels after reaching this stage in her life and career. She even thanked the people who stood against her because if she had not been critiqued she wouldn’t have taken their negative comments and worked on them. She also thanked her parents who were always supportive of her career and taught her to never let anyone question her choices.

For the #ChooseToChallenge, Rupal decided to challenge the patriarchy of society. She said she has always been questioned for being a career-oriented woman. She wants to silence these questions and break the patriarchal norms according to which the women are supposed to take care of both the household and her profession. She also said she wants equal cerebral rights for women. The career choices should not be restricted for the ladies.

Another aspect of the society that Rupal wants should be rectified is that of women who try to suppress other women. She said that women themselves try to bring down other women. A woman should understand the struggles and problems of another woman but instead, she questions the career aspect of that other woman’s life. She says that all the ladies should uplift each other and support each other in times of need.

Women should not wait for validation from others or wait for an opportunity to knock on their doors. We have to go out there and work for it. Also, women should stop feeling guilty and apologise for their success believes, Rupal Sidhpura Faria.
