The iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge popularly referred to as DDLJÂ recently celebrated 25 years since its release. The romantic film showcased a love story between the characters of Raj and Simran played by Shahrukh Khan and Kajol respectively. The film has a number of iconic sequences which are to-date referenced in Bollywood films such as the famous climax train sequence or Raj playing pranks on Simran. However, one sequence of the film which had also gained popularity was the ‘Palat’ scene where Simran played by Kajol walks away and Raj, played by SRK says that if she loves him, she will look back. Though the scene looks and sounds straight out of a Bollywood film, it has actually been inspired by a Hollywood film that released back in 1993.
The original scene was from the film In The Line of Fire! which featured Clint Eastwood and Rene Russo in the lead roles. The scene is similar to the Shahrukh Khan-Kajol scene from DDLJ. It is worth noting that while DDLJ released back in 1995, the Clint Eastwood starrer In The Line of Fire! had released just two years previously and therefore must have still been fresh in the minds of the film makers of DDLJ.
While this might come as a shocker to some, it also worth noting that Aditya Chopra, the director of the film, has admitted to copying the sequence. A book titled ‘Aditya Chopra Relives… Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ was released a few ago where the director had revealed that the sequence had got stuck in his mind but he had quickly forgotten about it. It was when he sat down to write the SRK-Kajol film is when the sequence came back to him and he put it in the script.
