Despite extensive treatment, Nargis died on May 3, 1981.

During an interview, Sanjay Dutt recalled his parents’ 23rd wedding anniversary, which was his mother’s last. Sanjay referred to that emotional moment when he said that Mom and Dad’s 23rd wedding anniversary on March 11, 1981, was a joyous occasion. They had decorated Nargis in green and red wedding saris, and many more saris came for her after that. She was a little down that day, and she told Sunil that she thought it was his final wedding anniversary. His eyes were welling up with tears. Sunil sat down with them, and they all began quietly watching him.
