The cast and crew

The script of Ek Jhoothi Love Story is written by Umera Ahmed, celebrated writer of the famous show ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’ while Mehreen Jabbar has donned the hat of the director. Interestingly, Mehreen is widely known for impeccable camerawork. Her show Mera Naam Yousuf Hai is also available on the streaming platform.

The story

The series revolves around Salma, a girl from a middle-class family. Salma’s family includes her parents, two elder sisters and a brother. Salma’s mother is looking for ideal life-partners for her daughters. On the other hand, the male lead character Sohail too belongs to a middle-class family. On the other hand, the series explores the bittersweet relationship that exists between family members. Amid the chaos in their family, Salma and Sohail create a fake world to live their love story for a while with their ideal partners, Nofil and Natalia, respectively. However, their life turns upside down when their families fix their marriage.

What works?

The writing and direction! Talking about each character, be it Salma, Sohail, Salahuddin, Shabana or  Shazia, the web-series has a tight grip over it. Apart from the lead actors, every character manages to leave an impression on the mind of the viewer. As the story comes to its end, the director wraps the sub-plot as well leaving almost no loophole. Meanwhile, Beo Raana Zafar is the cherry on the cake. With her accurate comic timing and quirky one-liners, she always manages to steal the attention from the rest of the cast.

Right from her first scene to the last appearance, it gets difficult to take eyes off her. Every time she enters the frame, the viewer can expect a good moment of a laugh. The cinematography and transition from one frame to another is quite smooth. Another thing, which stood out in the series, is that it is not entirely focused on the love-story angle, rather it also raises the question about society’s point of view over “ideal partner” and how it impacts the decision of an individual.

The show highlights how expectations to find the true love of your life are met with disappointments and surprises. The BGM and soundtrack of the series also deserve a mention. The viewer will not encounter any single frame where the BGM music sound unnecessary. Song O Mehrama expresses the feeling of pure yet amateur love.

Final words: 1. If you recently watched any heavy content, this series has will help you with its hangover. 2. Anyone who likes watching light-hearted family comedies, this series is the perfect pick for your next binge-watching session. 3. Last, but not least, not a single frame of the series has a scene that can make you feel uncomfortable in front of your family.
