The talked-about connection between cine stars and politics has gained momentum after superstar Rajinikanth quits politics. Though for different reasons, several Bollywood stars also stepped into politics but to no avail!

Cine stars and their political venture is quite a controversial subject to debate. Though there are examples like the late actor MGR who made an impressive mark in the political world, many of the other celebs-turned-politicians failed miserably. And this talked-about connection has gained momentum again after superstar Rajinikanth decided to dissolve his political outfit. While this news is making headlines for the last few days, it has also refreshed few similar stories from the past.

Recently, opting out of  Rajini Makkal Mandram, Rajinikanth confirmed that he has no plans to enter politics in the future. Citing health-related issues, the actor announced the shutting down of his political forum. However, this is not the first time any actor has given up on his political venture. Though the reasons might be different, several Bollywood stars also stepped into politics but to no avail.

So, here’s taking a look at 5 B-town stars who failed to make it big in the arena of politics.

Amitabh Bachchan

In 1984, superstar Amitabh Bachchan took a break from acting to make a brief appearance in politics. Reportedly, Amitabh stepped in to support his long-time family friend Rajiv Gandhi. The actor also contested for the seat of Prayagraj in the 8th Lok Sabha elections. Though he won the elections with a big mark, Amitabh’s political journey was short-lived. Moreover, the aftermath of the Bofors scandal pushed him to resign from politics.

Dharmendra

Unlike his wife Hema Malini, Dharmendra did not make it long in the pool of politics. The actor had joined Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in the year 2004 and was a member of Rajasthan’s Lok Sabha. However, after five years i.e., in 2009, Dharmendra decided to back out of politics. After which, he made a return to the big screens.

Sanjay Dutt

Following the footsteps of his father Sunil Dutt, Bollywood hunk Sanjay Dutt also ventured into politics. Joining the Samajwadi Party, the actor took up the post of General Secretary for a brief period. Later in 2009, Dutt was set to contest the 2009 elections. However, he had to back out when the court refused to clear his conviction in criminal cases. And in the following year, Dutt resigned from the party.

Govinda

In the year 2004, Govinda also joined hands with Indian National Congress. The actor also won during the Lok Sabha elections, amassing great support from the citizens. However, the actor opted out of the party in 2009 for unknown reasons.

Rajesh Khanna

Fondly remembered as India’s first superstar, actor Rajesh Khanna entered politics under the reign of Congress. He was a Lok Sabha member from the year 1992 to 1996. Reportedly, Khanna had planned to focus on his political venture and thus took a break from films. However, he also backed out of the political world in 1996.
