Dilip Kumar, one of the most popular superstars of the Indian cinema celebrates his 98th birthday today. The ‘tragedy king of India’ has appeared in over 65 films and has had a career spanning over five decades. He has left an eternal mark over the Indian film industry and has accomplished a lot in his illustrious career. From holding the record of winning maximum Filmfare Awards for best actor to introducing the ‘method acting’ technique, Dilip Kumar has made his career remarkable, legendary and timeless.

On the occasion of his birthday, we take a look at some of our favourite movies starring him.

1. Mughal-e-Azam

We have seen many period dramas, especially the ones that belonged to the Mughal era. However, Dilip Kumar’s epic movie Mughal-e-Azam will forever have our hearts. His role as Prince Salim in the film has been one of his most memorable performances.

2. Ganga Jamuna

How can we ever forget the only film produced by Dilip Kumar? Kumar’s performance as a naive young boy forced to become a dacoit has been deemed as one of his best works of all time. The film also starred veteran actors Vyjayanthimala and Nasir Khan in lead roles.

3. Ram Aur Shyam

4. Azaad

Azaad was one of the top-grossing films in the 1950s. The action-comedy starred Dilip Kumar in a lead role for which he also won the Filmfare Award for best actor. Kumar’s performance in the film was highly appreciated and the film received a series of positive reviews.

5. Devdas

We have all heard of this movie, haven’t we? One of the best-ranked movies of its time (1955), Devdas is an epic tragedy that starred Dilip Kumar in the title role. It is because of his spectacular performances like in Devdas, why Kumar is referred to as the ‘tragedy king of India’.

6. Madhumati

Dilip had once again provedd his versatility by staring in a paranormal-romance film titled Madhumati (1958). So many years have gone by but even today the film is remembered as one of the most influential and successful films of all time.

7. Saudagar

Romeo and Juliet is one of the most epic love sagas of all time and Dilip Kumar has starred in a Hindi film based on Romeo and Juliet named Saudagar for which he received a lot of positive reviews from the critics. Even the film was a critical and commercial success.

8. Karma

By the time Karma happened, Dilip was already a yesteryear actor but he still had what it took to ace his role in an action film. Kumar’s role as Dada Thakur will never be forgotten!

9.Vidhata

Yet another ‘highest-grossing film’ of Dilip Kumar, Vidhata is one of the most renowned works of Kumar. Albeit the film featuring an array of promising actors, Dilip’s performance stood out and had a significance of its own in the film. Referred to as an ‘all-time blockbuster’, the film was obviously a huge success.

Dilip Kumar’s work has withstood the test of time and has created an ever-lasting impression in the hearts of several generations. So many people from the film fraternity look up to him and see him as their role model.
