Actor and director Mahesh Manjrekar’s latest directorial The Power recently premiered on ZEE5 and Zee Plex. Starring Vidyut Jammwal, Shruti Haasan and Mahesh Manjrekar himself, The Power is a different take on the 1972 American classic, The Godfather. With intense action and thrilling storyline, The Power offers an exciting watch to its audience. Read on to know what we loved about the film.
The Power begins with a scene with Prateik Babbar, who is also playing one of the antagonists, Ranjeet, arguing with someone. Mahesh Manjrekar, who plays the role of the ‘Dada’, Kalidas Thakur, makes an entrance and Ranjeet is shocked to learn that he is still alive. The film then takes us a few years back to the story of the Thakur family.
The Thakur family is a crime family of India, whose head is Kalidas Thakur. Once, while discussing business, his enemies fire at his house, killing two of Kalidas’ associates. Kalidas’ son, Devidas, witnesses this and to keep him away from further trauma, Kalidas sends him away. A few years later, Devidas (Now, Vidyut Jammwal), returns in a family get-together. He is in love with the daughter of Kalidas’ closest aide Anwar (Zakir Hussain). Parveen (Shruti Haasan) and Devidas’ love story gets a good start and the chemistry between Vidyut and Shruti works very well. The pair was last seen as a couple in the film Yaara.
Kalidas has a wife, Uma (Medha Manjrekar), two other sons, Ramdas (Jisshu Sengupta) and Charlie (Aham Sharma), and one daughter, Ratna (Mrunmayi Deshpande). The entire family is happy about the union of Devidas and Parveen, except Ratna’s husband, Ranjeet, and Ramdas’ wife, Shaila (Yuvika Chaudhary). Ranjeet and Shaila are siblings and their constant sarcasm and behaviour towards the family’s aides, makes the family dislike them. Shaila even insults Anwar, which makes Parveen and Devidas get upset with her.
Later, Kalidas is approached by two crime lords, Fakira (Chetan Hansraj) and Francis (Sameer Dharmadhikari), to help them peddle drugs in India. Kalidas, a man of his principles, rejects the offer, saying that he will never associate himself with drugs. At the same time, Devidas and Parveen are about to get married. However, the rejection sets off Fakira and he attempts to assassinate Kalidas, bringing a stop to the wedding. Kalidas, now in a coma, is visited by Anwar. Ranjeet and Shaila create a scene in front of the family, accusing Anwar of treachery, which led to Kalidas almost dying. These things create even more ripples in the relationship between Devidas and Parveen.

Further in the film, it is revealed that Parveen is pregnant with Devidas’ child, and is sad that Devidas is not able to pay attention to her. At that moment, Anwar is approached by Rana (Sachin Khedekar), Kalidas’ brother in law, to join him in overthrowing the Thakur family. He makes him an offer which Anwar refuses, conveying that he would never betray the Thakurs.
Things begin to get worse when Ranjeet tricks Anwar and kills him, later misleading the Thakur family that Anwar had previously tried to kill him, and that Anwar was, in fact, a traitor. This makes Parveen angry and she vows to kill the whole Thakur family, including her fiance, Devidas. From here on, begins the crime rivalry and the long saga of revenge between Parveen and Devidas.
While Devidas is out to get revenge for his father’s assassination attempt, Parveen teams up with Rana and also marries his son, to be able to take down the Thakurs. The plot of The Power takes many interesting twists from here on, with traitors being revealed from within the aides and people battling for the seat of power. Things also turn extremely violent and gore as the need for revenge and authority rises.
The action scenes are very well shot and choreographed. Vidyut Jammwal, as always, comes out as a shining star when it comes to action. His stance and action are delightful to watch. One of the antagonists is Salil Ankola, who has beefed up for his role in this film. He also delivers good action sequences. Scenes of him killing in the movie remind us of ‘the Mountain’ from Game of Thrones.

Vidyut Jammwal has also acted really well. His expressions and dialogue delivery are perfect in the film. Shruti Haasan has also portrayed her role nicely. She too delivers perfect expressions. Her moments as a crime leader, where she shows authority are really effective. Mahesh Manjrekar delivers the best performance in the film. He feels completely natural in his role, delivering a convincing performance.
Jisshu Sengupta’s portrayal of Ramdas was also very effective. His moments of rage felt natural and organic. Prateik Babbar’s performance as the desperate antagonist is brilliant. He gives an effective performance. Sachin Khedekar, Zakir Hussain and Medha Manjrekar have also nailed their characters with all the ease. All the cast members, including Chetan Hansraj, Sonal Chauhan, Aham Sharma, Sudhanshu Pandey, Sameer Dharmadhikari, Yuvika Chauhan and Mrunmayi Deshpande have given absolutely amazing performances.
Mahesh Manjrekar’s direction is powerful and evocative. Whether it is the scenes with power and authority, the scenes with soft emotions, or tragic scenes, the feelings are very well conveyed by them. The editing of the film is also nice, giving a good transitioning to show the passage of time.
The cinematography of the film is also good, effectively capturing the shots in their perfect essence, and maintaining the gritty tone of the film. The background music is perfectly composed, adding to the tone of the film and conveying the emotions needed. Overall, the Power is an entertaining and thrilling watch, which has multiple emotions to convey, with its love story, action and tragedy.
