Who doesn’t remember the famous song “Jungle jungle baat chali hai,pata chala hai, chaddi pehen ke phool khila hai” ? The famous lyrics are penned by Bollywood’s renowned Urdu poet Gulzar Sahab, and the music composed by music director, Vishal Bhardwaj. 1. Mowgli – The man-cub

The most famous and loved boy, Mowgli is the feral child (a human child who has lived isolated from human contact from a very young age and so has had little or no experience of human care, behaviour and language). He is also referred to as “Man-Cub” and was raised by a pack of wolves, Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther in a dense jungle!

Baloo, also referred to as Bhalu is one of Mowgli’s friends and mentors. He is described as the sleepy old bear, who teaches Mowgli the law of the jungle. Many times, he saves Mowgli from a lurking danger and even plays with him in the water. While Mowgli adapts to Baloo’s habits and culture of eating raw honey!

Can you imagine a black panther being your friend ? Yes, Mowgli has a mentor and a companion named Bagheera. He raises Mowgli along with Baloo, and protects the man child at all times. He even sticks by Mowgli when the jungle dwellers are uncertain about keeping him with them.

Kaa is a deadly snake! She is the Indian rock python who scares Mowgli initially but gradually becomes his wise mentor and friend. She guides Mowgli through the jungle. Although, she is feared throughout the forest for her mesmerizing ‘hunger dance’. Kaa speaks the language of “hiss” and often disagrees with Baloo and Bagheera over Mowgli!

Sher Khan is the vicious, man-eating Bengal Tiger, who is the main villain and the archenemy of Mowgli. He is often known as the King of Tigers. Despite being born with a crippled leg, Sher Khan is ruthless, aggressive, violent, arrogant, self-centred and sees himself as the rightful ruler of the jungle!

The Seeonee wolf pack is the Indian pack of wolves that discovered Mowgli and raised him in the jungle. In fact, one of the wolves addressed Mowgli as the man-cub for the first time. Akela, the lone wolf, is the chief and leader of the pack. Mowgli’s adoptive wolf-mother is Raksha. Her husband Daurka, became Mowgli’s adoptive wolf-father. Their children Grey Brother and Leela are sibling-cubs to Mowgli!
