Indian cinema has been very influential to us, be it fashion, or trends or values that we learn. The way we think also changes due to our perception of films and how a character is portrayed. While there are great things that happen due to good films, some things are a bad influence

Despite Bollywood trying its best to make films better for its audiences involving men and women and giving them equal opportunity to showcase themselves, our movies sometimes portray orthodox, problematic, and stereotypical things. While Hindi Cinema is known for its colourful and vibrant storytelling, there are times when Bollywood has completely missed the point. Here are movies that have had dialogues that reinforce gender stereotypes–

1. Jab We Met

This Imtiaz Ali movie, which is still remembered for its lovely story and songs, has some problematic lines and we are sorry that people had to watch them in the theatres. One such dialogue says that a girl who is alone is like an open drawer full of money. What does that mean? Does this promote the idea that girls are sexual objects? Yes. And this was one of the most derogatory remarks we’ve heard in cinema.

2. Mard

In the famous Amitabh Bachchan movie, Mard, there is a renowned dialogue and has been used several times at many other places. The dialogue goes in such a way, saying that men do not feel pain. Why? aren’t men humans? The idea of toxic masculinity is right there. This dialogue is no longer relevant and never was as men also need emotional support and feel pain. Way to go, Bollywood!

3. Main Tera Hero

A Varun Dhawan starrer comedy film full of crass comedy and double-meaning jokes has an objectifying, unbelievable dialogue. The fact that Varun Dhawan said it without a blink gives out a terrible message. In the film, Varun Dhawan tells a fat girl that she’s so fat if she ever steps on a weighing scale, instead of a number, the scale would show a message of to be continued. No wonder the film flopped. This was in no way funny.

Some Bollywood filmmakers and writers need to improve their sense of humour
