Jagjit Singh Death Anniversary: Legendary Singer’s Top 5 Most Popular Ghazals That Will Stir Your Soul
MusicTen years ago, on this very day, the world lost Jagjit Singh who was one of the most popular Ghazal singers. Here’s remembering him with his 5 most popular Ghazals
Jagjit Singh was taken from us 10 years ago on this day to join with the holy spirit of the cosmos. The world has lost a one-of-a-kind human being and a world-class musician. Apart from music, composition, and singing, Jagjit Singh’s life was filled with a plethora of other traits. Compassion, total honesty, spiritual knowledge, wisdom, and unwavering love for everyone and everything in the cosmos. His energy lives on and discreetly communicates with others, whether via his calming voice or just through beautiful recollections.
In 2003, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. Today on his death anniversary, here are 5 of his most popular ghazals. Have a look:
He selected ghazals as a platform for his music because he adored Urdu poetry. His training in genuine Indian classical music, as well as his sensitivity and empathy for the ordinary man, enabled him to reach out to the heart. In terms of knowledge and craft, he was an Ustad. He excelled in many genres, from folk to khayal to thumri and devotional music. These elements were mirrored in his compositions. He did everything himself, from orchestration to sound balance, mixing, and editing. He was a one-man museum. Aside from the folk music that accompanied our rituals, seasons, and festivals, two primary genres dominated our music scene in India: Indian classical music and cinema music.
There was no third form to grab the imagination until Jagjit Singh appeared like a meteor on the horizon to popularise the third form — the ghazal. Today, ten years after his departure, the ghazal, and indeed, music in general, is in decline. God alone knows if this situation would ever improve in the absence of someone like Jagjit Singh.
