Kaagaz, a film based on a true story, released on ZEE5 on January 7, 2021. The film is about a man from a village in Uttar Pradesh, who is declared dead on government records, and fights for 17 long years to prove that he is alive. This is the true story of Lal Bihari, but in the film, his character is named Bharat Lal. Played by Pankaj Tripathi, here are five elements that make Bharat Lal a true fighter.
Not giving up even in toughest times
In his long battle, Bharat Lal faced a lot of troubles. His shop closed down, his financial condition was in ruins, his wife and children left him, he was beaten up, and a lot more things happened that broke him. But none of those could break his spirit and his will. He continued his battle even in those harshest of times.
Can laugh in the face of trouble, has a positive approach
Bharat Lal is a fun-loving and caring man. He has a positive approach to almost everything and in the film, you can also see him make fun of the troubles he is in. His wife and his lawyer, both advise him to give up the battle but he keeps his optimism alive and continues the fight. He also makes satirical and funny comments on his situation, which at one point makes his wife ask him to stop joking about something that serious.
 Does not compromise on self-respect
When Bharat Lal faces financial troubles, he faces a situation where he can accept financial help. But since accepting it would crumble his self-respect, he refuses that help. For him, his identity and self-respect being intact are important because his whole battle is based on it.Â
Not afraid to take risks
Bharat Lal’s task of proving that he is alive was an almost impossible feat to achieve. To make that possible, he took a lot of risks – some that could’ve landed him in more trouble or even could have gotten him killed. From kidnapping his nephew to making a huge scene in the Vidhan Sabha in front of the government officials and their security, he was not afraid to take any risks.
He believes in ‘Unity is Strength’
Bharat Lal, during his battle, realizes that he is not alone – there are a hundred people more who need to fight the same battle, of being proved alive on government records. In this situation, Bharat forms an association of ‘dead’ people. He realizes that there is strength in unity and the battle can be better fought with it. Also, even after his battle is over, he does not stop the war. He continues to fight for the members of his association.
