From the Royal family members of England to Japan, here are some of the most popular Royals who left everything behind to marry their commoner sweetheart. Princess Mako joins the long list of imperials who stepped down from their royal ranks.

Love knows no boundaries, and in the case of some of the Royals, it is even higher than the hefty titles. When you are with the right person, it does not matter what it takes to be with them. The Royals are the best trendsetters in this case, who did not even think twice before leaving their identity and setting off to spend the rest of their lives with their one true love.  

Here are some of the most popular Royals who left everything behind to marry their commoner sweetheart. They did not just belong to some of the world’s highest-ranked royal families but are also are worthy of their popularity.  

  • Prince Harry & Meghan Markle 

The very popular Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not just create headlines at the time of their marriage but also sent a wave of shock when they decided to step down from their titles. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to step down as the senior members of the royal family in early 2020. The reason quoted was the toxic press environment that had severe effects on their mental health.  

  • Prince Philip 

The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, remained an active senior member of the royal family until his demise in April 2021. What many are unaware of is that he belonged to the royal houses of Greece and Denmark as a Prince. He dropped off both his titles before marrying the now Queen Elizabeth and took his mother’s maiden name, Mountbatten.  

  • King Edward VIII 

Having served as the King of England for about a year, King Edward VIII was abdicated for marrying a divorced commoner named Wallis Simpson. He happily passed the throne to his younger brother, King George VI, to marry the love of his life. His statement stated that he could not discharge the duties of a King without the support of the woman he loved, while the church was against marrying a divorcee.

  • Princess Mako 

Recently creating headlines was Princess Mako of Japan, the niece of Emperor Naruhito. She stepped down from her royal titles to marry her college sweetheart Kei Komuro who was a commoner. The royal law of Japan forbids a princess to marry a commoner upon which she would lose her royal status.
