The very popular Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not just create headlines at the time of their marriage but also sent a wave of shock when they decided to step down from their titles. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to step down as the senior members of the royal family in early 2020. The reason quoted was the toxic press environment that had severe effects on their mental health.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, remained an active senior member of the royal family until his demise in April 2021. What many are unaware of is that he belonged to the royal houses of Greece and Denmark as a Prince. He dropped off both his titles before marrying the now Queen Elizabeth and took his mother’s maiden name, Mountbatten.

Recently creating headlines was Princess Mako of Japan, the niece of Emperor Naruhito. She stepped down from her royal titles to marry her college sweetheart Kei Komuro who was a commoner. The royal law of Japan forbids a princess to marry a commoner upon which she would lose her royal status.
