No Right To Waste Food: Upasana Konidela Encourages Us To Make Compost With Kitchen Waste

Upasana Kamineni Konidela joined hands with popular ‘eco-warrior’ Vani Murthy. The two educated us on how we should make the best use of things we dump in the dustbin. Making compost at home has already garnered eyeballs, but it’s time we start delving deeper into. Through their thorough conversation, we learned a few things that are already exciting to us.

So, let’s begin by understanding what compost really well. In words of Vani Murthy, “Anything that was living once, or is edible is organic matter”. And this organic matter is what we need to make our compost. Things like tea and coffee powder, eggshells, fruit and vegetable peels are all a part of it. By making compost at home, you can quite literally ‘make’ your own soil. And with this, you grow an entire range of fruits and vegetables that you wish to cherish.

The eco-warrior suggests that we start by collecting all the kitchen waste in a sieve-like vessel which can drain out the excess water. Once you are on it, there are four steps to making compost. You need to collect dry leaves and crush them as much as you can. In the worst case, you can substitute leaves with sawdust or cardboard cutouts. Now that you have your base ingredients, keep handy a little bit of sour buttermilk or cow dung.

This will provide our compost with necessary microbes and fasten the process of composting. Finally, store them in a natural container for the process to take place. You can also use any bucket that has a lid. But be sure to create small holes to allow oxygen to pass through it. Finally, keep turning and tossing the compost every few days to allow it to process evenly.
