Taapsee Pannu’s much-awaited ‘Rashmi Rocket’ premieres on October 15 in digital streaming platform Zee5. Directed by Akarsh Khurana under the sharp screenplay of Aniruddha Guha, Rashmi Rocket is a sports drama based on true life events. The movie does manage to capture all your attention with its opening scene in which Rashmi Vira (Taapsee Pannu) is forcefully arrested by a policeman in the middle of the night on the basis of a complaint that she is a man seeking shelter in a girl’s hostel. But does it have the crux to be worthy of a watch?
The concerns raised by Rashmi Rocket, a social-issue sports drama, are very legitimate. To be shoved up in a covert gender test at the start of the career has been seen as a real-life case with athletes such as Dutee Chand and Santhi Soundarajan. It is not just a story of one athlete. Carrying such a real and critical social issue on its back, Rashmi Rocket opens in a grand sequence but ultimately turns into a conventional melodrama with the evil motives of the antagonist.
The movie, unlike most sports dramas, does not just portray the nail-biting sports competition in the climax. This is more of a courtroom drama where the female protagonist, having left with no options, fights for her identity. Without being overly patriotic, it focuses majorly on the hardships that a female athlete has to face in this country. All of it has been magnificently portrayed by Taapsee Pannu.
Proving her position in the industry once more, Taapsee Pannu has done a spectacular job stepping into the shoes of Rashmi. The way she owns her defeats and triumphs with the perfect conviction will make you fall in love with her all over again. The important message that the movie conveys, which ought to be focused on by everyone, along with Taapsee Pannu’s terrific performance makes ‘Rashmi Rocket’ a must-watch.
