Reliving a time when the movies that we saw on our screens were not yet in colour, but were moving images in monochrome shades, is a lot of fun. Many of them make for some of the best quality entertainment available today, and watching them revives an era that was practically a different world. The following films open up the gates into a whole lot of nostalgia, so enjoy them!

Rajkanya is a film from 1965 directed by Sunil Bandopadhyay, based on a screenplay by the legendary Ritwik Ghatak. Starring Uttam Kumar, Rina Ghosh, and Chandrabati Devi in the lead roles, it is about Darpa, a crooked man who asks Rajkumari to masquerade as Princess Chadralekha so he can keep her wealth for herself. His evil plans are foiled, however, when she realises the truth and makes sure that he faces the consequences.

Chupi Chupi Ashey, made in 1960, stars Chhabi Biswas, Jahar Ganguly, Rabin Majumdar and Tapati Debi. The characters Prabir and Kanika start the business of running a hotel and advertise it through handbills. As it happens, a woman gets murdered in Kolkata, and some of these handbills are left by the murderer. Watch for a riveting plot full of coincidences among the hotel guests that lead the detective right up to the culprit.

Prothom Kadam Phool is a Bengali drama from 1969, starring Soumitra Chatterjee and Tanuja. Sukanta and Kakali love each other, but because of a misunderstanding, Sukanta comes to feel that Kakali and Baren are getting closer to each other. He gets insecure and confronts her about the same. However, Baren finds out about their rift and resolves matters between Sukanta and Kakali.

Nishi Padma is a famous Bengali drama film from 1970 directed by Aravinda Mukherjee, with Uttam Kumar and Sabitri Chatterjee playing the lead characters. Based on a short story written by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay called Hinger Kochuri, this film was later adapted into another popular Hindi movie, namely, Amar Prem. A true classic, Nishi Padma is a must watch!

Raja Saja is a drama film in black and white from 1960, starring Uttam Kumar, Sabitri Chatterjee, Chandrabati Devi, and others. Directed by Bikash Roy, the plot revolves around a rich zamindar (landowner) who intrudes upon and manipulates the life of a simple-minded man from a village.
