On January 17, legendary Kathak guru Pandit Birju Maharaj, the luminary of the Lucknow Gharana of Kathak, died unexpectedly at his Delhi home. At the age of 83, the great artist took his last breath in the middle of the night. Padma Vibhushan was awarded to the great classical dancer. In a social media post, Pandit Birju Maharaj’s grandson Swaransh Mishra verified the tragedy of the famed dancer’s death. Various Celebrities took to social media shortly after the dancer’s death to express their sorrow and condolences.
Madhuri Dixit, who has been mentored by him, uploaded a throwback photo of herself with Birju Maharaj, in which she is seen in her classical clothing while he is teaching her. “He was a legend but had a childish purity,” she said in the post. He was not only my mentor but also a friend.

He not only taught me the fundamentals of dance and Abhinay, but he also made me laugh with his amusing anecdotes. He has left behind bereaved admirers and learners, as well as a legacy that we shall all continue on. Anupam Kher uploaded a video on Twitter, professing his sorrow at the death. “It’s quite sad to learn of Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj’s passing,” the actor stated, recalling his early career recollections of the kathak dancer. Certain people you encounter along the way in life leave an indelible mark on your heart. When he was at the National School of Drama, Birju Ji was the director of the Kathak academy, which was just next door to the NSD building. Seeing him on a regular basis throughout his time at NSD was incredible,” Kher remarked.

She said, had the honour and privilege to spend 3 full days with Birju Maharaj while she was filming Ghar More Pardesiya. She will never forget what he taught her and it was one of the most fulfilling experiences. She also called him a legend who will be remembered forever.
