We all love watching Lakshmi in Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal. Her charming attitude and her beautiful relationship with her daughter-in-law makes her one of the most lovable characters on TV. By now, we have gotten used to the ways of the family and have understood why Lakshmi stands out from the rest of the characters. To love is all she knows and this innocent instinct of hers has already stolen our hearts. However, not all is great for her as she lives a life full of compromises, without even realizing it.
Lakshmi is a character we might have come across in our daily lives. A loving daughter and an even more loving mother, Lakshmi is everything we know mothers in our society to be. Her house is her world and she spends most of her time inside, mostly cooking her family’s favourite dishes and keeping the place clean. She is obedient of her Thatha and is only an advisor for her son. She doesn’t have a social life of her own and is afraid to even go out as she thinks that it would upset Thatha.
She lives for her son and it was proven when he confessed his love for Pavithra to Lakshmi. Instead of having an opinion, she simply nods in agreement and makes sure the two get married. However, she also sees her son as a ‘capable man’ who has the right to be critical of her. In the latest episode, we saw glimpses of the same as she was verbally attacked by Thatha and Santosh just because she went out of her way and met Harikrishnan at his restaurant. For the two misogynistic men, this was a wrong action from her side.
Later, we saw her act rude to Harikrishnan who just visited to return her phone. When quizzed by Pavithra, she defended her action by stating that Thatha and Santosh wouldn’t have liked it of she welcomed him politely. This scene proved that she never thinks of herself and her joy is never even considered in the house. Lakshmi lives in her own world where she is merely a woman who must follow and live by Thatha and her son’s wishes.

She goes on to tell Pavithra that a “good family” will always be peaceful, and to attain the same one must give up when there is resistance. Lakshmi’s words surprise Pavithra as well as the viewers of the show, revealing that she lives by an aged and wrong concept. Lakshmi must realise that she too has a life of her own which she can live as she pleases. Instead of putting herself on a leash, she must understand that her friendship with Harikrishnan is not a wrong thing. She must step out more and understand how she has been living in a bubble all this time.
