Rani Rashmoni: Rani Ma is a people’s queen who never loses her ideals, here’s proof

The widely loved television show Rani Rashmoni revolves around the life of Rani Rashmoni, the founder of the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple in Kolkata and a late social reformer. Rani Rashmoni (played by Ditipriya Roy) was a very liberal woman with a progressive outlook who always stood by her people. She was known for her liberal, considerate and caring nature as a queen and for everyone else she came across in life. Rani Maa, who always protected and worked for society, always took a stand against unfair behaviour towards all her people. The on-screen character of Rani Rashmoni is quite a reflection of what she really was!

Recently, when Bhupal informed Rani Maa that some people were found lying unconscious at the ghat, she was shocked. Although no helpers were available to take care of them at Janbazar, she let them be kept there. Rani Maa even immediately asked for the doctor to be called for their examination and recovery.

Not too long ago, hibiscus flowers for Maa Kali’s puja fell short when devotees asked for some. This made Rani Maa furious and she held herself and Mathurbabu responsible. She couldn’t fathom the fact that her villagers would be deprived of Maa’s blessings, and said she was ashamed that this was happening at her temple. Later, she pledged to worship the Goddess with a thousand hibiscus flowers as well and asked Mathurbabu to be more competent at handling the temple’s responsibilities.

Another time, when the rebels sought refuge at Rani Maa’s residence, she shielded them from the British officials who tracked them down to her house. When the Captain threatened to kill the rebels and ordered the soldiers to shoot them, Rani Maa fearlessly stood between them and protected them from causing them harm.

Rani Maa also took a stand to promote the practice of widow-remarriage. She fought against all odds to take crucial steps in the process of passing the law. She dealt with the Brahmins who insulted Ishwarchandra & opposed their opinions with utmost grace and intelligence. Her efforts in this matter helped countless women gather the courage to exercise their right to live a normal & fulfilling family life again.
