On October 10, iconic actress Rekha, who redefined the ‘Bollywood heroine’ in many ways, turned 60. To commemorate her special day in a truly cinematic manner, we’ve compiled a list of three films in which she shone brightly.
Umrao Jaan (1981):
In Muzaffar Ali’s period piece, she played the iconic courtesan Umrao Jaan Ada. Her performance was recognised with a National Award. A remake starring Aishwarya Rai, like Khoobsurat, was dismissed as a pale shadow of the original. Songs from the films Dil Cheez Kya Hai, In Aankhon Ki Masti, and Yeh Kya Jageh Hai Dosto continue to be popular to this day.
Utsav (1984):
This film, directed by Girish Karnad and produced by Shashi Kapoor, redefined Rekha for the masses. After the film, both Rekha’s on-screen and off-screen status changed. Her sensuality and boldness on screen were groundbreaking at the time. Shekhar Suman owes her thanks for giving him such an early boost in his career.
Khoon Bhari Maang (1988):
Biwi Ho To Aisi, and no, we’re not referring to the other film of the same name in which Rekha starred. Rekha plays Kabir Bedi’s unsuspecting wife, who is duped by him and left for dead. After a sort of resurrection and a makeover, she returns seeking vengeance and succeeds. With a strong script and Rekha, the film proved that you don’t need a male superstar to make a super hit film. For Kabir Bedi, this cemented his reputation as a villain even more than his role as a Bond villain in Octupussy.
