In our society, women have been subjected to prejudice for a long time. Whether it’s about the kind of work she does, the way she behaves, or even the person she loves, the journey has always been a little difficult for a woman. ZEE5’s latest original series, The Married Woman addresses all these issues and more. This show starring Ridhi Dogra and Monica Dogra in lead roles talks about an unconventional love story beyond societal conditioning. Astha, Peeplika, and their journey of falling in love teaches everyone to #BreakTheBarriers and choose their own happiness for once.

While Astha and Peeplika were seen challenging stereotypes even in a story set in the 1990s, a lot of women face the drawbacks of this same mentality even today, which makes this story even more relevant. Recently, Ridhi and Monica took to Instagram, asking other girls to talk about the stereotypes they face and vent out their frustration. Here are some of our top responses:
Ever since childhood girls have been conditioned to talk a certain way, sit a certain way and behave a certain way. They’re always told to avoid doing things that aren’t ‘ladylike’ and that’s what this user highlights. Even a girl going to a different country by herself is questioned upon.
In our society, just like Astha, women have been limited to the roles they play, that of a mother, daughter, wife, etc. And any woman without maternal instincts is frown upon. Even if she chooses to be a doctor, it’s assumed she’d be a gynaecologist or paediatrician. If we’ve learned anything from The Married Woman, it’s that any woman can #BreakTheBarriers and fly high.
A single woman is unacceptable to society. In fact, women are pressured into getting married at a certain age even if they’re independent. This user highlights the issue while also talking about how if the woman isn’t married by a certain age people start assuming there is something wrong with her and that she needs to get medical help. Even a woman travelling solo is frowned upon.
While everybody called Peeplika troublesome, citing her ‘modern behaviour’, even in today’s day and age women with modern haircuts or edgy fashion are demeaned characterless or “too open”. And the only thing we want to say to these women is that even they should live their lives like Peeplika – without caring about anyone’s opinion.
Yea! Why would she study? Eventually, she has to get married and become someone’s wife right? Women have been hearing this all their lives.
You’re doing a job? But how will you continue after getting married? Kitchen and kids become a priority, right? While a man continues with her career and life as it is, a woman is expected to sacrifice her career to become a glorified maid.
We’re pretty sure every working woman has heard this at least once in her life. If a guy works till late in the night, he’s hardworking. Whereas if a woman works till late in the night, she’s considered to be getting into some bad company and spoiling the name of her family.
What’s with the feminism haters? We’ve seen many people comment on feminism without even knowing its true meaning. Feminism asks for equality and apparently, it’s too much to ask for.
Just the way poor Astha was conditioned by everyone about how she should behave in a certain way, girls have been conditioned all their life to dress up according to societal standards to be considered as ‘good girls’. If Astha can #BreakTheBarriers set by her own family, so can we!
Yes, that’s right. Why would a woman have any opinion? Eventually, she has to live her life according to someone else wishes right?
While we see Peeplika driving a car even in the 1990s, even today in the 21st-century women are being taunted about not being good drivers or not even knowing the directions correctly.
Just as expected out of Astha, almost every woman, no matter how modern or independent, is expected to adjust and compromise according to the husband. Why? Because we don’t teach men to be considerate enough to put their needs after a woman’s needs.
While these and many other stereotypes in the comments section might have made everyone’s blood boil, the only person who can start to bring about a change in these situations is us. If every woman #BreaksTheBarriers like Astha and Peeplika did, then no woman can be bounded by societal rules.
