According to reports, the distribution of Marvel’s Eternals would be prohibited in certain countries, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar. Eternals was supposed to be released on November 11th in the Gulf region, but it allegedly met a snag when local censors demanded a series of modifications, which Disney allegedly refused to do. Eternals appears to have vanished from the websites of these countries, while it is still listed as “coming soon” in the United Arab Emirates. Although no one knows for sure, but there are rumours that the inclusion of a same-sex kiss in Eternals was a moment that censors wanted to be removed.

Phastos, played by Brian Tyree Henry, is one of the characters in Eternals. Phastos is a brilliant engineer and inventor whose vast knowledge aids humanity’s technological advancement (for better or worse). Phastos, though, finds renewed faith for humanity after witnessing how viciously mankind exploits his gifts by settling down and starting a human family with his husband Ben and kid. It’s no secret that Phastos’ story will involve an onscreen kiss with his husband, which will be the first same-sex kiss in the Marvel Cinematic Universe brand.

Because homosexuality is still outlawed in the Gulf region, it’s not a stretch to believe that movie authorities in that society wanted the LGBTQ+ inclusion in Eternals to be restricted, while Disney was well aware of the potential for massive public relations fallout if the alterations were made. That’s just supposition, though; Disney has yet to make a public statement on the subject.

This prohibition may not have a significant impact on Eternals’ box office projections, but it is also not helpful. The film has received the MCU’s lone “Rotten” rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, making it the franchise’s worst-reviewed film. Unless the film is carried by a big wave of positive reviews, we have to wait for what will happen next.
