“Fashion Killa” rapper A$AP Rocky raised the style quotient at The 2021 Met Gala with his cool look. He donned a colourful quilt by ERL designer Elli Russell Linnetz. But there is more to the story. Someone called Sarah took to Instagram to post, from her handle @books_n_babies, that the she knew where the quilt came from, and the story she posted is fascinating.
Great-grandmother connection
Sarah wrote that the quilt was designed by her great- grandmother, Mary. The quilt was donated to an antique store. “So my great grandmother’s quilt was donated to an antique/thrift store a while back. When I saw the #metgala photo, I realized instantly that it had to be the same quilt,” she wrote and shared a photo of the quilt on her “old bed” juxtaposed with a photo of A$AP wearing the quilt.
Sarah said she read The Vogue article on how the designers purchased the quilt from Southern California, not far from where she is at in Venice California.
“I demanded that my mom go look for the photos of it on our old bed. Looks like great grandma Mary went to the #metgala with @asaprocky and @erl__________ ,” Sarah said.
‘Amazing statement art piece’
Even as some said that Sarah’s great-grandmother should be recognised, Sarah clarified that won’t be necessary and that is not her intention to say that anyone has stolen the quilt or that she wants money from it.
She further explained: “I posted this because I found it amazing that something that my great grandmother made out of love for my mother, to be used to keep her warm, and was donated so that it might keep somebody else warm or sold to raise funds for a lovely charity, ended up being used for an amazing statement art piece by amazingly talented people who took it to the next level.”
She also wrote that she spoke with Elli and the quilter @zakfoster.quilt and praised them for “working so hard on the piece.”
