The Verdict – State vs Nanavati is a retelling of the sensational KM Nanavati vs State of Maharashtra case, dating back to 1959. The ZEE5 Original and ALTBalaji Original web series beautifully recreates the retro charm, revisiting the era when Mumbai used to be Bombay. In a major #FashionFlashback, the digital drama also showcases the days of glossy fashion when Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe highly influenced the game. The period of graceful fashion is perfectly depicted in every garment and clothing worn by Elli AvrRam, Kubbra Sait, Sumeet Vyas, Angad Bedi, Manav Kaul amongst others who play the lead characters in the series. Their respective wardrobes can be said to be one of the most well put together ones in recent times.

To begin with, the dresses worn by Kubbra and Elli are supremely chic. The leading ladies were dressed in buttoned-up, bow, pleated, high-collared numbers, sometimes paired with net gloves.

Nothing quite spells retro like polka dots! Besides polka, large checks were so during the immediate post-independence era. Elli AvrRam, who plays Sylvia Nanavati in The Verdict – State vs Nanavati, is seen wearing a simple yet classy polka dot dress, tapering on the sides.

Parsis have always enjoyed a reputation for their elegance and stylish taste. In The Verdict – State vs Nanavati, Elli AvrRam as Sylvia Nanavati is shown wearing pastel, chiffon and embroidered sarees, offering a glimpse into the Parsi fashion in India. In one of the scenes, she is seen in a white see-through saree paired with boat-neck, sleeveless blouse while another has her clad in an all-black saree. Needless to mention, the nine-yard fashion shown in digital drama is extremely classy.

Curls were a rage during the 50s in India. A beehive or a puff or curly locks tied in a ponytail or half up half down style were immensely popular, as is also shown in The Verdict – State vs Nanavati.

Fit n’ flare, balloon sleeves, wide-legged pants, bell bottoms are all a blessing passed on from the 50s. The trend that once hit the streets of Bombay like wildfire made a quick comeback, in denim and other variations as eras passed by. Kedarnath actress Pooja Gor, who portrayed a journalist in The Verdict – State vs Nanavati, was seen sporting several such creations, throwing it back to the flamboyant times!

Abstract print, floral print in bold colours garnered a huge fan-following in 1950s India. Kubbra Sait and Sumeet Vyas’ characters were shown donning the same in The Verdict, which is set during the same era.

Large checks and waistcoats were staple to every fashionista’s wardrobe during the 1950s. This is exactly why we see Angad Bedi and Rajesh Khera dressed accordingly in The Verdict. Angad essays the exuberant lawyer Karl Khandalavala while Rajesh stepped into the shoes of DCP Lobo.

Oversized sunglasses, cat-eye shades or the evergreen round frame are quintessential to every retro look. Besides, fashion followers also loved to flaunt a stylish scarf with their outfit in those days.

Women in the freshly independent India loved to flaunt their shoulders in halter-necks and cold shoulder dresses. Another trend they’d dig was an abundance of bling on their bodies! Stylish gems, shining pearls, and dazzling jewels always came in combination with svelte and stylish outfits.

The era was a sucker for accessories too. Kubbra Sait as Mamie Ahuja wears a bunch of hair accessories, pearls along with her fashion-forward picks in The Verdict – State vs Nanavati.

Even back in the 1950s, fashion police would swear by giant hoop earrings, be it round, squared, triangle, etc. Kubbra Sait’s character Mamie Ahuja in The Verdict is shown wearing hoops on a couple of occasions in the series set in the 50s.
