It is true that football was introduced into India by the British in the 1800s, but northeastern India held onto the sport in such a way that it feels indigenous now! A personal experience of this is on a trip to Gangtok, Sikkim, I met a few boys who played football every day for five hours. They all had one dream–to be in the Indian football team. In every household, the boys harbour the dream of becoming a footballer!
Kolkata derby is one of the most famous ones in India. When the annual matches between football clubs of West Bengal begin, viewers from all over India visit the state. FC Kolkata is also one of the most dreaded teams of the Indian Super League. Somehow, it is the breeding ground for famous footballers. The state is obsessed with the sport.
