Ram Gopal Varma talks about his obsession with the dark side of Mumbai and his movie D-Company.

Ram Gopal Varma is a well-known filmmaker who is popularly known for his ‘out of the box’ subjects and movies. The filmmakers in his recent interview talked about why he is attracted to the dark side of the world and how his obsession actually began. RGV, as he is informally known, mentioned that his obsession during his school days.

Ram Gopal Varma was asked when his obsession with the gritty grungy underbelly of Mumbai’s dark side began. He said that his obsession with the dark side of people started with him loving movies in his classroom during his school days where students threw chalk, pinched each other, pulled hair from the back, and then it lead to getting amused by the street goons in Hyderabad.

He added during the time of his movie Satya, he being from Hyderabad watched some movies about gangsters. There was some ruthless and violent activity in 1995-97 which became his basic inspiration to make Satya and his movie Company was as a follow-up to it.

He talked about his movie D-company and said, “the difference in D-Company(2021) which I have made now is that Satya and Company were basically imaginations although I had seen gangsters and goons, it was more from written instances, stories heard from people so it was very superficial and peripheral. But 2-3 years back I actually got to meet people who had actually worked in a group called D-Company. (Not a registered company but a name given to a criminal organization by Daud)

He added, ” I was fascinated by what I heard from these people. Some of them were ex-cops, some were gangsters who had gone to jail and came out. The combination they gave me with their stories and the material helped me make this film. Because they were so far behind that phase that they could actually talk and feel comfortable in sharing details which earlier they wouldn’t have.”

RGV further said, “if you look at Bombay from the time where Daud started from Dongri in late ’80s to Chota Rajan getting arrested in Bali in 2015, it’s almost a 34 year Saga of D-company in a way.
So I made the movie of Daud starting off in 1982-83 and his brothers being killed by the Pathans. So I just wanted to tell the story of how Mumbai got to know about Daud the first time. Therefore, after making this movie we are going to make a series of the next 30-35 years of the underworld journey with the same name D-company. So this movie doesn’t say the whole story from start to end but it’s actually like a trailer designed for the series to come ahead.
