The actor’s heartwarming performance in this tragic tale starring Taapsee Pannu and Rishi Kapoor, is one you can’t miss.

Character actors are the soul of the film and give it the much-needed depth. Actors such as Satish Shah, Himani Shivpuri, Manoj Pahwa have been seen in several films.  There comes a point when we start taking these actors for granted, without realising that their performance is as applause-worthy as the lead characters.

With his stellar act in Mulk, Manoj has proven that he surely deserves a film of his own.  The actor has been seen playing a father, a brother, etc in films such as Dil Dhadakne Do, Taal, Jolly LLB etc. In Mulk, he shines and it’s hard not to be involved in his story, to the point where you start laughing and crying with him.

If his scene at 54:31 in the film doesn’t make you cry, we don’t know what will.

The actor plays Bilal Mohammed, a man who is accused of being involved in his son’s terrorist activities. Bilal is held by the police and questioned after his son Shahid gets caught in a terrorist act and shot during an encounter.

Manoj plays the miserable Bilal with such honesty, that you can’t help but feel incredibly sorry for the man. There’s a scene where Manoj is being mishandled by the police and he keeps repeating, “My name is Bilal. I am Shahid’s father and other than this, I don’t know anything.”  At this point, you just want to reach out to Bilal and let him know that everything will be okay.

Manoj proves his craft in the scene where he is being questioned by his elder brother Muard Ali (Rishi Kapoor) who asks him if Bilal knew of Shahid’s terrorist activities. Here, the actor displays his vulnerable side and is authentic in his craft.

It’s here you realize that Manoj is a bundle of sheer brilliance, who sadly is underrated in Indian cinema.  It’s high time the audiences as well as Bollywood recognizes such impeccable talent and give actors their due.
