1. Kadambini Ganguly

From fulfilling the various roles of mother, daughter, wife or sister to achieving new heights in every field, women have proved that they are a force to be reckoned with. While running the family to fighting patriarchy on a daily basis, every woman is nothing less than a superhero! On this International Women’s Day, here are few prominent Bengali women who have broken the barrier of gender and shown us the real meaning of #GirlPower.

From being the first female graduate to becoming the second female doctor in India, Kadambini Ganguly has shattered many stereotypes. The legendary scholar was one of the most charismatic women in the history of India. She even went on to practice in the United Kingdom, post which, she started her own clinic to serve people in our country. 2. Pritilata Waddedar

Pritilata Waddedar (1911- 1932) was a freedom fighter who was instrumental in India’s movement of Independence. She graduated from Bethune College in Kolkata, with a distinction in philosophy, and became a school teacher. During the freedom struggle, she joined Masterda Surya Sen’s revolutionary group and spearheaded several operations.

3. Bina Das

A notable freedom fighter, Bina Das set the standard for female nationalists. Known for her bravery and boldness, she tried to assassinate the then Governor of Bengal province, Stanley Jackson, for which she was imprisoned. Post her release from jail, she joined the Congress party and went on to participate in many more movements. She served as the pioneer for the active participation of women in the freedom struggle. Many women rallied behind her cause as they came to appreciate her fearlessness.

4. Matangini Hazra

Yet another freedom fighter who showed the strength of women, Matangini Hazra was one of the well-known female leaders who followed Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of non-violence. She participated in all the mass movements such as the Quit India Movement, Salt Satyagraha, etc. Thanks to her advocacy on non-violence, many people from Bengal followed her footsteps to help in the freedom struggle.

5. Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain

Back in 1905, Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain was one of the first-ever Bengali women to write a book. She wrote Sultana’s Dream, an English novel that spoke about feminism. Her book was considered as a major work of literature during those dark days of patriarchy. Her tale spoke about feminism and taught women back then to be free and dream. Not worrying about the various complaints and issues she faced from society, she marched ahead to talk about these ideals.
