Mahashivaratri marks the union between Lord Shiva and Parvati. This exuberant festival is celebrated during the month of Maasi (February-March) with enormous zeal and enthusiasm in different parts of the country. On the auspicious day of Shivaratri, the devotees of Lord Shiva perform several rituals and make offerings like bael (wood apple) leaves, milk, and honey to the ‘shiva lingam.’

Devotees of Lord Shiva also observe a fast to show their love to the deity; The ‘viratham‘ is kept during the day and broken at night. During the fast, observers are only allowed to eat satvik food (items that do not contain onion, garlic, and salt).
