Popular historical drama Swarajyarakshak Sambhaji is based upon the great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s son Sambhaji. The show has shown viewers Sambhaji’s journey and the sacrifices that he made, to protect his kingdom. Sambhaji’s enigmatic personality has always been shrouded with a cloak of mystery, where some called him a treacherous king who tainted his father’s respect, to others who knew him as the great warrior that sacrificed his life for Swarajya.

The show is based upon historical records and has proven that Sambhaji was a perfect ruler and it was not his fault that Swarajya crumbled. The courtiers and his officers like Anaji Pant and Kanhoji Rao went out of their way to achieve power and their greed led to the falling out of other army officers as well. Sambhaji’s innocence and his nature of trusting everyone easily, probably made the king suffer. In various sources, it is written that Sambhaji was not aligned with the dream of Swarajya that his father professed, but as per the show, this was not the case at all!

The King fought relentlessly and won forts for the Marathas, along with the support of his wife Yesubai. He even went on to recapture the forts that were lost to the Mughals. Sambhaji fell prey to treaties which made him stay away from his family from a very young age. However, he made sure such treaties and political games were not played during his reign and this move by the king is worth appreciation.

Towards the end of the show, Muqarab Khan was seen capturing Sambhaji. Aurangzeb was trying to make the Maratha king bend his knee, which the latter refused to do. As per historical records, this is how Sambhaji was martyred at the hands of the Mughal emperor. But the former made sure that he fought for his land and people, till his last breath. If that doesn’t make for a great ruler, then what does, right?
