The Makers Of Auto Shankar Need To Be Applauded For Not Glamorising The Central Character

Auto Shankar is a web series now streaming on ZEE5. The series that is inspired by the true events related to the rise and fall of the ruthless gangster Gowri Shankar in the city of Chennai is directed by Ranga. And the main lead of Auto Shankar is essayed by the talented actor Appani Sarath.

The series that deals with not just Shankar’s life but also narrates the story of a power hungry folks are already gaining a good deal of attention due to the seamless acting showcased by the lead actors and the inherent quality of the director and cinematographer to give a visual treat.

But what must also be highlighted in the show is the manner in which the story of the narrative is presented. The story starts with the captivity of Shankar, followed by the slow progress into the psyche of the criminal, who is about to be hanged. We see the tension in the eyes of Shankar, but he keeps it under the veil of his calmness, and as the dreaded hour edges near we can hear the final notes of despair in his voice but we don’t see a flicker of emotion on his face.

What must be noted and appreciated about the makers of this series is the fact that they have not glamourised the role of Auto Shankar and made him a saviour of the poor. But they have very cleverly created a character who is an honest depiction of Shankar, as to what he was and how he was. This is something unique as compared to the others who have handled such a subject.

Moreover, in all the issues and dilemmas, we as viewers, only get to see about Shankar from the perspective of a third person and not from his own perspective. This gives us the scope to think and wonder as to what is going on in the mind of the cold-heart killer and it also gives keeps us aloof from the character. At a good distance so that we do not find inspiration in his misdeeds.
