1. State Of Siege: 26/11 based on a book by Sandeep Unnithan

Every year, World Book and Copyright Day, aka International Day of the Book is organized by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation). It was first celebrated on April 23, 1995, to promote reading, publishing and copyright. Resonating with the spirit, ZEE5 has adapted many novels into a number of original series like Love Bites and Skyfire. Have a look at the journey from books to screen:

1. State Of Siege: 26/11 on a book by Sandeep Unnithan

The extremely gripping crime thriller series State Of Siege: 26/11 is based on the book Black Tornado: The Three Sieges of Mumbai 26/11 by the acclaimed defence writer Sandeep Unnithan. It stars Arjan Bajwa, Arjun Bijlani and Vivek Dahiya in lead roles of NSG commandos (National Security Guard) of India. It revolves around the deadliest terrorist attack in Mumbai, on November 26, 2008.

2. Skyfire based on a book by Aroon Raman

ZEE5 Originals and Aroon Raman’s collaboration resulted in the adaptation of his eponymous novel into the web series, Skyfire. India’s first and one-of-its-kind science-fiction thriller story, it stars Bollywood actors Prateik Babbar, Sonal Chauhan, Jatin Goswami and Shataf Figar. Directed by Soumik Sen, it revolves around a boy who disappears from the slum to discover mindblowing realities.

3. Never Kiss Your Best Friend based on a book by Sumrit Shahi

Based on the novel by the same name, the series Never Kiss Your Best Friend has the author Sumrit Shahi as one of its screenplay writers as well. Starring Nakuul Mehta and Anya Singh in lead roles, the story talks about two college besties Sumer Singh Dhillon and Tanie Brar. The romantic-drama redefines the rules of friendship as they meet each other after five long years of separation.

4. Love Bites based on a book by Anmol Rana

Anmol Rana’s best-selling novel Seven Days Without You has been made into the romantic drama series, Love Bites. With the tagline “New Bar Every Day”, the story revolves around Vishwas, a young boy who travels to Pune in search of a better job opportunity. He encounters seven new girls in seven days. It stars Anshuman Malhotra, Raima Sen, Priyal Gor, Priya Banerjee, Puneesh Sharma, etc.

5. The Final Call based on a book by Priya Kumar

The book I Will Go With You: The Flight of A Lifetime is written by best-selling author and motivational speaker Priya Kumar. It has been adapted into the psychological thriller series The Final Call. Featuring Arjun Rampal as Captain Karan Sachdev, an ex-pilot in the Indian Air Force, it addresses mental health as well. Actress Sakshi Tanwar stars as ATC Kiran Mirza (Air Traffic Control).

6. Bhram based on a book by H. Hari Kumar

Starring Bollywood actors Kalki Koechlin, Sanjay Suri, Eijaz Khan, Bhumika Chawla and Chandan Roy Sanyal, the psychological horror-thriller Bhram is based on H. Hari Kumar’s novel The Other Side Of Her. The story revolves around a romantic novelist Alisha Khanna, who tries to unravel the mystery between real and unreal, by questioning #SabBHRAMHai?

7. Parchhayee based on stories by Ruskin Bond

Ruskin Bond is one of the most celebrated novelists around the world. He is an Indian author of British descent. A collection of his ghost stories is the inspiration behind the horror series Parchhayee: Ghost Stories by Ruskin Bond. The episodes tell various short stories with a common central point. It stars Kunaal Roy Kapur, Shakti Kapoor, Raima Sen, Gauhar Khan in lead roles.

8. Hutatma based on a book by Meena Deshpande

Adapted from Meena Deshpande’s novel by the same name, Hutatma is a Marathi historical-drama series, dubbed in Hindi. Providing insight into how Maharashtra came into being with Bombay as its capital city, it stars Anjali Patil, Vaibhav Tatwawaadi, Sachin Khedekar and Arif Zakaria. Discover the epic story of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and the struggles of the Marathi Manus.

9. A Married Woman based on a book by Manju Kapur

“Una Mujer Casada” is Spanish for A Married Woman, which is an upcoming original series. The novel by the same name is written by Manju Kapur. Starring Ridhi Dogra and Monica Dogra, it revolves around two women with varying perspectives of feminism and the institution of marriage. It highlights the 2019 Supreme Court verdict that decriminalised same-sex relationships.
